Hey! Listen! The character for this week is Link, from the Legend of Zelda series!
I’m deciding to combine this week with Toon Link, because the designs would end up turning out very similar. So for Toon Link’s week, I’ll do something else 🤗
If I don’t play as Ike in Smash Bros, Link is my next choice. He’s one of my all time favorite video game characters, so I was super excited to make Link this week, and I’m just as excited at how he turned out! I love his fluffy hair and cute elf ears ☺

Konnichiwa! Hello! Today marks the second week of Super Smash Saturday, with the character of the week being Donkey Kong!
When I started making him, I wasn’t too sure how he was going to turn out, but I’m happy with the result, especially the tie with the little letters. 😊
Next week’s character is Link! I am super excited about this, The Legend of Zelda games are some of my absolute favorites, I could play and replay any of them all day.

Alright, despite my lame attempt at a hair pun in the title, you’ve made it to a blog post all about adding hair to crochet dolls! There are so many different ways to add hair, so I’ll be going over the ones that I know of and use most often. The method I end up picking usually depends on the character’s look or the style I am going for.
Fluffy: This type of hair style takes the longest, but I think it’s the most rewarding! It involves attaching the strands of hair, and then brushing them out (tediously) with a dog brush.
I like to use this type of hairstyle most often, and find it best for short and spiky hair, or wild and crazy hair. I would say the only downside (other than the massive arm workout) is that it’s hard to get long strands brushed out like this, which is why I don’t usually use this method if I’m making a character with long hair.
Crochet: For this type of hairstyle, I make several crochet pieces and attach them to the head. As usual, the easiest for me is to use hot glue to attach the pieces. The pieces can be straight, curly, or triangles, all depending on the hairstyle!
Attach: This is my preferred method when making characters or dolls with long hair. It’s the same attaching the strands to the head as the fluffy style, but without using a dog brush. I like to use the softer, variegated (multicolored) yarn for this as pictured below.
Felt: With felt, I use it for a small amount of hair, such as sideburns on Mario! It’s also great to use if you need to make shapes that are complicated to crochet.
Needle felting: I don’t use needle felting for hair too often anymore, but it can be used in lots of ways! It’s a little tricky to get used to, but with some practice you can make some really neat shapes. It’s also good for other details like eyebrows.

First week of Super Smash Saturday, woo~ I’m super excited to get this started! I posted an explanation of this series, if you’d like to check it out, click HERE.
And now, without further ado, we can get started! First up on the roster is (drum roll please)… Mario!
Every time I set out to make something new, I always start with a sketch. It’s much easier for me to visualize how something will turn out if I can draw it in simple shapes and forms. It took a couple iterations for me to decide what kind of style to go with, and in the end I went with the one on the bottom (I couldn’t resist how cute the sketch looked)!
After that, I selected the yarn! It’s the typical red and blue Mario is usually seen wearing, along with some detail colors for the gloves and shoes. For this project, I used a combination of Red Heart and Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn.
Now that everything is prepared, I usually like to start out with making the head (or whichever piece will be the largest). This helps me get a good idea of the size, and it prevents me from making arms or legs that are too big or too small. For the eyes, I used 12mm safety eyes.
Next up is the body, the arms, and the legs. I knew I wanted this Mario to have a chibi look (a big head and small body), so I kept that in mind as I made the body, arms, and legs.
And now it’s time for the fun part – the details! The suspenders were simple chains done with the blue. For small details or complex shapes (like the little yellow buttons and the mustache), I like to use felt. Not only is it easier than trying to achieve the size and shapes with crochet, it has a nice look to it too.
Last but certainly not least, Mario’s hat! Since I wasn’t going to give Mario any hair underneath the hat, I added some felt sideburns and then attached the hat so it doesn’t come off. Finally, I used felt to make a little white circle with an M on it, and put that right in the center of the hat.
I am super satisfied with how he came out. He is so cute and I can’t wait to make more of him! Mario is just one of those iconic characters that almost everyone knows, even if they aren’t gamers.
I think my favorite Mario game would have to be Super Mario Sunshine – it’s one of the first Mario games I played, so I have some pretty fond memories of it. What’s your favorite Mario game? Leave it in the comments!
