2020 is the year of the rat, and what better way is there to start the new year than with a new pattern?

This year, it’s my resolution to grow this crochet business! I’ll be releasing more patterns (both free and paid), and will be expanding my inventory for conventions. I’m also thinking it may be time to redesign my logo, but that one is more of a stretch goal.

2020 Rat Pattern

Materials:

  • White yarn (or your color of choice)
  • Pink yarn (or your color of choice for ear insides)
  • Crochet hook (I used a G hook)
    • You can use any size crochet hook; keep in mind that the size of the finished rat will vary based on the hook you use
  • 6mm safety eyes
  • Stuffing
  • Felt (black for the nose, pink for blush (optional))
  • Hot glue (I use hot glue for assembly; if you’d like to sew the pieces together to assemble, leave a long tail after finishing off with a slip stitch)

Abbreviations:

  • MC = magic circle
  • SC = single crochet
  • INC = increase
  • DEC = decrease
  • SL = slip stitch
  • CH = chain
  • * = repeat around

Body:

  • Using white yarn…
    • R1: SC 4 in MC (4)
    • R2: SC 1, INC * (6)
    • R3: SC 2, INC * (8)
    • R4: SC 3, INC * (10)
    • R5: SC 4, INC * (12)
    • R6: SC 5, INC * (14)
    • R7: SC 6, INC * (16)
    • R8: SC * (16)
    • R9: SC 7, INC * (18)
    • R10: SC * (18)
    • R11: SC 8, INC * (20)
    • R12: SC * (20)
    • R13: SC 4, INC * (24)
    • R14: SC 5, INC * (28)
    • R15: SC * (28)
    • R16: SC * (28)
    • R17: SC * (28)
    • R18: SC 5, DEC * (24)
    • R19: SC 4, DEC * (20)
  • Place the safety eyes between R4 and R5, about 4 stitches apart – begin stuffing!
  • R20: SC 3, DEC * (16)
    • R21: SC 2, DEC * (12)
    • R22: SC 1, DEC * (8)
  • Finish stuffing, then finish off with 1 SL – leave a tail to sew the opening closed
  • Cut a small triangle from black felt (for the nose) and two small circles/ovals from pink felt (for the optional blush). Use hot glue to attach the felt pieces to the face as pictured below:

Ears (x2):

  • Using white yarn…
    • R1: SC 6 in MC (6)
    • R2: SC 1, INC * (9)
  • Finish off with 1 SL

Ear Insides (x2):

  • Using pink yarn…
    • R1: SC 6 in MC (6)
  • Finish off with 1 SL

Arms (x2):

  • Using white yarn…
    • R1: CH 4
    • R2: In 2nd CH from hook, SC across (3)
  • Finish off with 1 SL

Feet (x2):

  • Using white yarn…
    • R1: SC 6 in MC (6)
  • Finish off with 1 SL

Assembly:

Attach the ear insides to the slightly larger white ears

Attach the ears to the top of the body

Attach the arms and feet to the body

Attach yarn to the nose area to make whiskers

Attach a piece of yarn to the bottom of the body to make the tail
